As you can it is no surprise as to why resin bound driveways in Darlington are becoming more popular with almost one on every residential road across the town.
We believe it is a combination of a number of different factors mainly it’s large life expectancy, it’s beautiful aesthetics and the fact that a lot of driveways in Darlington are made up of old concrete. Much of this old concrete can be utilised when installing a new resin driveway by carrying out repair work before laying over the top without having to break and dig out the existing driveway.
Resin Driveways Colours
There are a huge range of colours available for resin driveways, each mix is made up of 4 bags of kiln dried aggregates made up of 20 primary colours so the colour combinations are absolutely huge.
You can find below some of the most popular blends and colour combinations but please bare in mind a custom mix can be created to suit your tastes.
We have installed most of these colours for previous customer’s in Darlington and the surrounding areas if you need to take a closer look before deciding, it can be arranged.
A lot of people who buy a resin bound driveway opt for a perimeter border that uses a contrasting colour, so it really is possible to create something totally unique for your home.

Resin Driveway Bases
If you are thinking about buying a new resin driveway in Darlington there are a number of factors to consider before installation.
The first is what is the ground made up of currently?
Resin driveways must be laid onto a suitable solid base such as concrete or tarmac. Resin should not be installed over the top of block paving, flagstones, gravel, soil or anything other material that moves as this will cause the resin to fail and crack in the future. If there is not a suitable solid base to work with then one must be constructed.
As mentioned above a lot of driveways in Darlington are already made up of damaged concrete and are ideal to work with as a base for resin driveways.
If however you have a tarmac driveway or concrete driveway as long as there is not any structural damage the resin can be laid over the top of it after some preparation work, naturally saving a lot of additional cost.
Sometimes damaged driveways can have sections removed and replaced whilst utilising a lot of the existing base before the installation to help save money. This also applies to otherwise sound driveways which require extending for extra space. The general rule of thumb is if it is concrete or tarmac and looks reasonable there is no need to remove it.
Installing Resin Bound Driveways in Darlington
After a new concrete base has cured or an existing driveway has been thoroughly pressure washed and/or repaired it is time to start installing the resin driveway.
The first step which should be addressed at the previous stage is to decide whether the resin bound driveway will be finished with a block paving. If block paving borders are to be used the block should sit 18mm proud of the base which will allow the necessary amount of resin to be installed whilst remaining absolutely flush with the block paving.
If you decide for either no border or a contrasting resin border then aluminium trims must be screwed into the base to form an 18mm retaining edge for the resin. Once the borders have been installed it is time to start mixing the resin with the aggregates or stones.
A forced action mixer is a specialist tool that must be used at this stage of the resin bound driveway. It is essentially a large steel drum that forces each stone to be fully covered with the resin.
Firstly 4 bags of kiln dried aggregates must be added into the mixer until any surface dust has disappeared, after that Part A and Part B of the resin is mixed together separately which encourages a chemical reaction as they start to harden.
The resin mixture is then added into the forced action mixer with the kiln dried aggregates until full coverage has been achieved. The mixture is then released from the mixer into wheel barrows before being troweled onto the base by hand.
Resin Driveway Maintenance
Low maintenance is probably the reason that resin driveways in Darlington are the most popular option at the moment. However do not be fooled by resin driveway companies claiming that resin is maintenance free, if it is neglected it can still become a habitat for weeds and algae.
Unlike block paving, resin bound driveways do not have sand joints which are the perfect habitat for weeds instead they have tiny little cavities between some of the stones or aggregates. These cavities take a lot longer for tiny weed roots to take hold and this can be avoided by sweeping the area with a stiff brush to ensure that any airborne detritus from birds or trees do not settle into the resin bound surface – prevention is always better than cure.
Sweeping is the only regular maintenance needed to keep your resin driveway looking pristine however there are certain circumstances where the driveway will require extra cleaning work.
Oil spills can be removed from the surface with hot water mixed with detergent, this should be done as soon as possible.
Tyre marks can become visible over time with some of the lighter colour options, these can be removed by wiping the surface with white spirit and cleaning with hot water mixed with detergent.
Concrete and cement marks can be removed by applying a dilute hydrochloric acid or a proprietary cement remover, immediately followed by a thorough rinsing with clean hot water mixed with detergent.
If the resin driveway has been neglected and weeds have appeared on the surface a pressure washer can be used to remove the visible ones and a herbicide should be used to ensure that all future growth has been inhibited.
Is a Resin Driveway For You?
We believe that a resin bound driveway in Darlington is a safe option for the vast majority of homeowners because of the general age of most of the properties with most driveways either being made up of old concrete or tarmac, meaning that expensive excavation work is often avoidable.
The main factor to consider about whether a resin driveway is the right choice for you, apart from whether you like the appearance of them, for most is cost.
If the ground is already made up of a suitable solid base mentioned earlier then a resin bound driveway is probably one of the more cost effective options and generally makes sense.
However if a suitable base needs to be installed this can dramatically amplify the overall cost as it is essentially two separate jobs. A professionally installed concrete driveway is a substantial cost in itself, without adding the additional cost of a resin driveway. This can be a deciding factor for some homeowners with budget in mind.
